The city boasts Matsue Castle, the "black castle" or "plover castle", one of the few remaining medieval castles in Japan. The castle grounds include a winding path through mixed forests of bamboo, shrubs and trees, many of which are very old and identified by species. Matsue, Japan (282 words)
Matsue, chief town of the prefecture of Shimane and the largest city in the historical region of San-in, lies near the northwest coast of Honshu on the River Ohashi, which links Lake Shinji to the west with the Nako-no-umi Lagoon to the east.
To the north of the town, on the Shimane Peninsula, is a hilly coastal region which forms part of the Daisen-Oki National Park.
The fief of Matsue was granted to Horido Yoshiharu by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1600 for his services in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Horio completed the building of the castle in 1611, shortly before his death.

Nicknamed the "fl castle" or "plover castle", it is one of the few remaining medieval castles in Japan – at least of the few remaining in their original wooden form, and not a modern reconstruction in concrete.
The construction of Matsue Castle began in 1607 and finished in 1611, under the local lord Horio Yoshiharu.
