FACTOID # 165: Bolivia has 4,500 Navy personnel - which seems like quite a lot for a landlocked country.

Encyclopedia > Matthew Elliott

Matthew Elliott is an Australian cricketer. Representing Victoria in the domestic competition, he has a reputation as a strong opener.

Elliott's Australian representative career began in 1996/1997, when he replaced the out of form Michael Slater as then-captain Mark Taylor's opening partner against the West Indies. During this series, he ran into his batting partner Mark Waugh and injured his knee severely in an incident which was widely replayed on television. He returned to the side for the subsequent Ashes series in England and established himself with two centuries. However, he was soon forced out of the team again and spent several years playing domestic cricket only. His outstanding season in 2003/2004 resulted in a new record for Pura Cup/Sheffield Shield runs of 1381 and a new Australian Cricket Board contract. During the 2004 series in northern Australia against Sri Lanka, Elliott was recalled for one match to replace captain Ricky Ponting who did not play for personal reasons. While his score of 1 was not particularly flattering, he has again established himself as being just outside the Test team and a ready replacement for any of the top order.
