Maury County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 69,498. Its county seat is Columbia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,594 km˛ (616 mi˛). 1,587 km˛ (613 mi˛) of it is land and 7 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 69,498 people, 26,444 households, and 19,277 families residing in the county. The population density is 44/km˛ (113/mi˛). There are 28,674 housing units at an average density of 18/km˛ (47/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 82.39% White, 14.25% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 3.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 26,444 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.03.


In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $41,591, and the median income for a family is $48,010. Males have a median income of $37,675 versus $23,334 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,365. 10.90% of the population and 8.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.50% of those under the age of 18 and 12.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
