The Max Planck Institutes operate independently from, though in close cooperation with, the universities, and focus on innovative research which does not fit into the university structure due to their interdisciplinary nature or which requires resources that cannot be met by the state universities.

The Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich was founded in 1973 as the successor of the three formerly independent institutes MPI of Biochemistry (founded in 1912 as Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut in Berlin-Dahlem), MPI for Protein and Leather Research (founded in 1954 in Regensburg) and the MPI for Cell Chemistry (founded in 1956 in Munich).
Research at the institute focuses on studies of the relationship between the structure and the activity of biological systems with various degrees of complexity, i.e.
