1891 - The Music Hall in New York (now known as Carnegie Hall) has its grand opening and first public performance (Tchaikovsky is the guest conductor).
A Japanese bomb, launched by balloon and called a fire balloon, explodes near Lakewood, Oregon, killing a woman and five children who were examining it during a church picnic (the bomb exploded as the children were dragging it from the woods).
1992 - The Twenty-seventh Amendment to the United States Constitution receives its 38th ratification by the Alabama Legislature and therefore becomes law.
2000 - Conjunction of all traditional planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Moon and Sun).
2001 - Chandra Levy's parents report her missing to Washington, DC police.
2002 - The first "Free Comic Book Day" promotional event to promote popular interest in the medium in North America; timed to coincide with the premiere of the film, Spider-Man.
May was always considered the favourable month for visiting the wells which possessed a charm for curing sick people; but a strict silence was to be preserved both in going and coming back, and the vessel in which the water was carried was not to touch the ground.
On May5th, 1713, the corporation of Doncaster ordered 'a whipping-post to be set up at the stocks at Butcher Cross, for punishing vagrants and sturdy beggars.' The stocks were often so constructed as to serve both for stocks and whipping-post.
