Mayakovskaya Russian: Маяковская, a Metro on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line, is one of the world's best-known and most-photographed subway stations and a symbol of the Metro system. Its architect was Alexei Dushkin, who was also responsible for some of the Metro's other more memorable stations. The triumphant Art Deco design features graceful columns faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite and a total of 24 (now 25) ceiling mosaics by A.A. Deineka entitled "26-Hour Soviet Sky." There is a bust of the poet Mayakovskiy, for whom the station was named, at the end of the platform. The Zamoskvoretskaya Line (Trans-Moskva River Line) is a line of the Moscow Metro. ... Mayakovskaya opened in 1938 along with the five other stations that made up the original Zamoskvoretskaya Line. Because of its great depth (33 m), the station served a variety of roles during World War II including air raid shelter, anti-aircraft battery command post, and the site of an assembly held in 1941 in honour of the 24th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. 1938 (MCMXXXVIII) was a common year starting on Saturday (link will take you to calendar). ... In 2005 a new second exit was built along with a new vestibule in a unique way. Passengers leaving the station must first descend on a short escalator ride into an underground vestibule and only then climb on the long one to the surface. The new exit also allowed access the 25th mosaic which was previously hidden behind the service section. The bust of the poet was moved to the new surface vestibule whose ceiling was also decorated with a mosaic composition from the poet's poem "Moscow Sky".

RUSNET :: CIS Today :: 2004/04/21 :: Architects: Grandest Metro Faces Collapse (812 words)
The Mayakovskaya metro station, where Stalin famously threw a party during World War II, is in dire need of repair and faces collapse if top-to-bottom renovations aren't carried out soon, the daughter of the station's designer and other architects warned.
Mayakovskaya, which opened in 1938, gained instant plaudits for its design of ribbed steel, red and fl marble columns supporting 36 oval cupolas and its colorful ceiling mosaics.
She said metro officials are in talks with City Hall and the federal government, which together oversee the subway system, on what kind of work needs to be carried out but conceded that the talks have been going on for a long time.
