Mays Landing is a census-designated place located in Atlantic County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,321. It is the county seat of Atlantic County⁶.

Geography

Mays Landing is located at 39°27'22" North, 74°43'37" West (39.456028, -74.727050)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.94% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,321 people, 892 households, and 599 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 527.1/km² (1,362.8/mi²). There are 952 housing units at an average density of 216.2/km² (559.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 91.25% White, 5.00% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 3.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 892 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $52,628, and the median income for a family is $60,000. Males have a median income of $41,432 versus $30,154 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $23,477. 6.8% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
