History
Mayville was incorporated as a city in 1845. Originally inhabited by the Fox, Potawatomi, and Winnebago native American tribes, the surrounding area was mainly populated by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. The city was named after William May, a prominent early local resident. Mining, milling and agriculture were staples of the local economy.

Economy Mayville has a reputation as a blue collar community, and is home to several large manufacturing facilities. Among these are plants operated by Metalcraft, Mayville Engineering Company, Inc., Affiliated Products, Inc., and Gleason Reel, a subsidiary of Hubbell Corporation. As one might expect from its location in central Wisconsin, dairy farming and other agricultural activities comprise an important part of the local economy.

Sports During the 2006-2007 school year the Mayville Cardinals, the high school sports team, was dominated by the Horicon Marshmen. The Cardinals suffered a horrible 34-7 loss in Mayville to lose the Marshbowl, a traveling trophy. The first match-up between the Cardinals and Marshmen proved the Marshmen's athletic dominance, as the Cardinal's were handed a 69-49 loss. Some call it a one year wonder, others call it skill.
