Capella is the Japanese domestic market name for Mazda's midsize family car; larger than the Familia/323 but smaller than the Luce/929. The vehicle has also been sold as the Mazda 616, 626, Montrose, and Ford Telstar, and is closely related to the short-lived Mazda Lantis, Cronos, Persona, Autozam Clef, Eunos 500/Xedos 6 and Mazda MX-6/Ford Probe. Production of the Capella lasted from 1970 until it was replaced by the Mazda Atenza in 2002.

Plain 4 cylinder engines ranged from 1490cc to 1586cc and 1769cc. See also this link (http://me.a-spec.ca:6001/Past/Piston/70Capella.html).

Mazda 626 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1201 words)
In 1993 the Mazda 626 saw big changes in body style and powerplants since the 626 moved to an entirely different platform, moving it to the mid-size class, the same time Nissan launched the mid-sized Altima (replacing the Stanza compact car) to compete with the redesigned 626.
Mazda's new 4-cylinder is a much-improved 2.3 L 4 with 160 hp (119 kW); the V6 is a 3.0 L, 220 hp unit based on Ford's Duratec engine block, but with completely reworked cylinders and valvetrain components.
Mazda was the last of the Japanese to increase its entry to "midsize" status; the 6 is still the smallest (and most agile) of the bunch.
Mazda Capella - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (658 words)
The 616 was a major component of Mazda's United States expansion in 1971, having been preceded by its rotary brother, the RX-2, the previous year.
The Mazda Cronos and Efini MS-6 had taken the GE platform that the Capella might have used.
The Mazda Cronos name was retired and the Capella, 626, and Telstar once again shared a common platform.
