Mazdaspeed is Mazda's in-house race and street car tuning arm and is highly involved in both amateur and professional motorsports. The purpose of every Mazdaspeed vehicle is to amplify all the areas that already make Mazdas stand out in their classes: Power, handling, driver connectivity, style and value. Mazdaspeed models are factory-developed with integration and balance as the guiding parameters. Image File history File linksMetadata No higher resolution available. ...

After the FIA effectively outlawed the Wankel engine the next year, the Mazdaspeed team turned away from professional racing and focused instead on enabling third-party competition of Mazda vehicles. Mazda assumed control of Mazdaspeed in 1999 as a tuning and performance parts operation within the company. Towards this goal, Mazdaspeed provides significant support for drivers participating in Spec Miata racing. Drivers can order performance and replacement parts at appreciable discount. In 2003 Mazda released their first consumer offered Mazdaspeed vehicle which was the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protegé which was only released in the North American market. Soon after another Mazdaspeed model was offered in 2004 which was the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata and only released in the North American market as well. Mazda soon realized that these high performance models could be successful outside of North America and the next vehicles would be available worldwide. In 2006 the Mazdaspeed 6 was released worldwide and featured the most powerful Mazda engine ever producing 274 BHP and featured all-wheel drive. For the first time Mazda didn't cease production of a Mazdaspeed vehicle after it's first year of production as they did with the Mazdaspeed Protegé and Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata. They continued in 2007 with a Mazdaspeed 6 model and released a new vehicle the Mazdaspeed 3 which has the highest horsepower in its class with 264 BHP and 280 lb-ft of torque. Since the release of the Mazda RX-8 in 2004, enthusiasts have been begging Mazda to produce a factory tuned Mazdaspeed version of the RX-8 with the vehicle being supercharged, not turbocharged like previous hot-rod RX-7s for the “import car” scene. This is said to be due to the port design of the RENESIS rotary. At the Tokyo Auto Salon 2007 Mazda Japan said that they were working on a Mazda RX-8 Mazdaspeed M'z Tune (production model). This fully customized version of the high-performance RX-8 boasts increased sports car appeal through modifications to raise comfort levels and driving feel. Mazda E&T has taken advantage of its long relationship with the base model to offer a tuner that makes driving safe and fun, both on and off the track. No release dates nor if this RX-8 will be available in Japan only or worldwide have been announced at this time. http://www.rx-8.mazda.co.jp/mz_tune/ In the United States, Mazda North American Operations and Mazdaspeed host a traveling "drive event" called Zoom-Zoom Live (formerly called Rev It Up) that allows normal people to drive Mazda cars around a timed course for points. This is one of very few drive events that drivers are actually timed and scored. Mazdaspeed also sponsors many amateur and professional race series in the US that involve the Mazda Protege, Mazda MX-5 (Miata), Mazda 3, Mazda 6, and RX-8. Mazda also sponsors many "import tuner" events where they display and allow attendees to test drive their current Mazdaspeed models at that specific time. Mazda's performance brand Mazdaspeed debuted this year with the Mazdaspeed Protegé for the North American market, an update to the Protegé MP3 that had a 170 hp (127 kW)/160 ft•lbf (217 N•m) T25 Callaway Garrett turbocharged and intercooled engine, Tochigi Fuji limited slip differential, 17 inch Racing Hart wheels, larger four-wheel Euro disc brakes, and a custom Kenwood MP3 stereo system that included an amplifier and an 8 inch subwoofer. There were over 1000 additional mods to the original model that the Mazdaspeed Protegé wasn't just a cosmetically changed vehicle, it was a total different animal. The 2003 models came in two colors, Black Mica and Spicy Orange. Mazda then followed with a mid year change dubbed the "2003.5." These models included four new colors which were Blazing Yellow Mica, Sunlight Silver Metallic, Laser Blue Metallic, and Titanium Gray Metallic, different aero-kit, darker hyper silver Racing Hart wheels, and custom interior pieces. In total, there were only 4,750 Mazdaspeed Protegé models produced. This was the last year for the production of the Protegé which would be replaced by the extremely popular Mazda 3. The Protege/Familia was produced for a staggering 40 years (1967 - 2003) before production ceased. http://carsmedia.ign.com/cars/image/MazProinline.jpg The Mazda 323 (called the Familia in Japan) was a subcompact car produced by Mazda in Japan between 1976 and 2003. ...
