McCartney performed during the pre-game ceremonies at the NFL's Super Bowl XXXVI on 3 February 2002, and was the halftime performer at Super Bowl XXXIX on 6 February 2005.
McCartney was to use his concert backing band in the studio but later, at the suggestion of Godrich, decided to play almost all the instruments himself, including drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, block flute, harmonium, and flugelhorn.
McCartney later noted that it was the first time he had performed at the Grammys and that 'I finally passed the audition', a clear reference to a statement made by John Lennon at the end of The Beatles' famous rooftop concert.

It is notable for the fact that McCartney, a multi-instrumentalist, performed the entire album (all instruments and voices) by himself, except for keyboards and backing vocals from his first wife, Linda McCartney.
Accepting that the situation was irretrievable, McCartney decamped with wife Linda McCartney and their new family, including Linda's daughter from her first marriage, Heather, and their newborn, Mary, to their home in London in the autumn of 1969 so he could plot his next move.
As ever, McCartney had brought his instruments with him, as well as a portable Studer four-track tape recorder, and recorded the ad-libbed "The Lovely Linda" to test the equipment before the year was out.
