Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,495 km˛ (577 mi˛). 1,488 km˛ (575 mi˛) of it is land and 7 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.
Townships The county is divided into sixteen townships: Benton, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Canistota, Emery, Grant, Greenland, Jefferson, Pearl, Montrose, Union, Ramsey, Richland, Salem, Spring Valley, Sun Prairie.

The racial makeup of the county is 98.87% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
