Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,924 km˛ (1,901 mi˛). 4,797 km˛ (1,852 mi˛) of it is land and 127 km˛ (49 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.58% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 34,402 people, 13,216 households, and 9,541 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km˛ (19/mi˛). There are 15,427 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 70.54% White, 9.30% Black or African American, 13.57% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.34% from other races, and 5.02% from two or more races. 3.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 13,216 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.30% are married couples living together, 14.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.06.


In the county, the population is spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.10 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $24,162, and the median income for a family is $29,933. Males have a median income of $26,528 versus $17,869 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,693. 24.70% of the population and 21.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.40% of those under the age of 18 and 21.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
