McDuffie County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 21,231. The county's county seat is Thomson, Georgia6. It is named after the South Carolina governor and senator George McDuffie.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 690 km˛ (266 mi˛). 673 km˛ (260 mi˛) of it is land and 17 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.45% water.
Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,231 people, 7,970 households, and 5,857 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km˛ (82/mi˛). There are 8,916 housing units at an average density of 13/km˛ (34/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 60.78% White, 37.52% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,970 households out of which 36.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 19.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.08.
