The Mealy Parrot (Amazona farinosa), commonly known as the Mealy Amazon in the United States, is one of the largest Amazon parrots. They are approximately 40 cm (15 1/2 in) tall, tail tip to head. They weigh between 650 and 900 grams (Roughly 1 1/2 to 2 lbs). It is also called the Blue-Crowned Mealy Parrot in the United Kingdom, for the patch of purple or blue found on the top of it's head. The Mealy Parrot’s natural habitat ranges from Southern Mexico south into Northern Bolivia and Eastern Brazil. They commonly inhabit the sparse tropical rain forests in this region. Most Mealy Amazons have a distinctly violet/blue crown as mentioned above. Some also have yellow on their heads. The rest of their bodies are mostly green, their tails feathers being light green/lime at the tip. Some Mealy Parrots have a light blue/teal sheen to their green coat. Under their wings feathers can be found of yellow, blue, purple, red and teal. Their beaks are a yellowish horn color, and they have a white unfeathed ring around their eyes. Their eyes themselves are a reddish orange color. The Mealy Parrot interacts with other Amazon parrots. It enjoys contact with other birds and can be found in pairs, or in flocks of great numbers. They are even known to socialize with other parrots, such as macaws. When the Mealy Amazon reaches sexual maturity it forms a permanent relationship with one partner. In the wild this parrot feeds off of fruits, seeds, berries, nuts, blossoms, leaf buds, and in some cases fruit or vegetable fields. The following is a list of famous pairs listed alphabetically. ...

Transport of Mealy Parrots from their native environment is problematic. Certain countries allow the capture and transport of wild birds, but birds living near the boarder of such a country could be caught while flying over the country. Such is happening with wild birds in the bordering countries of Nicaragua, which allows the capture of wild parrots. Mealy Parrots are also beings smuggled into the United States from Mexico in large numbers.

The Mealy Amazon in a highly compatible bird when it comes to contact with people. It seems to enjoy the interaction as much as with other birds. Compared to other species of parrots, and even the other subspecies of amazons, the Mealy is a relatively quiet bird. It can speak well when the time is taken to teach it. As well as other birds of the parrot family, it has a very high level of intelligence. For the runtime engine for Perl 6, see Parrot virtual machine. ...

The cage of a Mealy Amazon should be large and square. In no instance should any bird be kept in a round cage. A round cage offers no corners where a bird can step into and feel secure. This can lead to psychological problems in some birds. The cage should offer plenty of space inside, and many toys to keep the bird entertained and thinking. In the wild parrots have to think constantly, working to find their food. Despite proof that all intelligent forms of life (dolphins, chimpanzees) appreciate constant play, for parrots the need for toys is as much for the enjoyment as for the work. A play area on top of the parrot’s cage is ideal, though a separate play stand can work as well. Mealy Parrots, just like other parrots, are recommended to sleep for 12 hours a day. So it is important that they have a perch that can be comfortably used. If a concrete perch is placed in the cage do not make it the highest or the most secluded perch. Their feet can become raw if they spend all of their time on a concrete perch, and parrots tend to choose the highest or most secluded perches to sleep and spend the better part of their time when inside their cage. It is important a parrot spends at least 3 hours of a day outside of their cage, though more then 3 hours is highly suggested. Mealy Amazons at play enjoy climbing enthusiastically. They also like to perch and stretch their wings by flapping them repeatedly. Any type of toy that can be disassembled also appears to be a hit. A toy like this could be plastic teething links or a children’s building cubes. Wooden blocks offer the Mealy something to destroy, a favorite pastime. Foot toys are also a must with a Mealy Parrot, considering their distinct taste for climbing. Climbers on Valkyrie at the Roaches. ...

Diet The diet of a domestic Mealy Amazon should be largely fresh fruits and vegetables. A high caliber bird pellet can be a great supplement in a pet parrot's diet to ensure it has the proper vitamins needed. In general, a bird should never be on an all seed diet. If a bird becomes a 'seed addict' it can be difficult to switch them to a healthy diet. Mealy PArrots should be fed 2-3 times a day, keeping a few pellets in their pellet bowl at all times. Mealy Amazon should have fresh water even if they do not always appear to drink it. Change the water at least once every day. The male will eat for both himself and the female during the incubation period. He will regurgitate the food for the female to eat. The young will leave the nest around 8 weeks of age.
