Encyclopedia > Mechatronics

Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering ("mecha" for mechanisms, i.e., machines that 'move'), electronic engineering ("tronics" for electronics), and software engineering. The purpose of this interdisciplinary engineering field is the study of automata from an engineering perspective and serves the purposes of controlling advanced hybrid systems. Synergy or synergism (from the Greek synergos, συνεργός meaning working together, circa 1660) refers to the phenomenon in which two or more discrete influences or agents acting together create an effect greater than that predicted by knowing only the separate effects of the individual agents. ... Mechanical engineers design and build engines and power plants. ... Mechanism is the following: In general, a mechanism is part of a chain of causes leading to some object or process. ... Wind turbines The scientific definition of a machine is any device that transmits or modifies energy. ... Electronic engineering is a professional discipline that deals with the behavior and effects of electrons (as in electron tubes and transistors) and with electronic devices, systems, or equipment. ... // Electronics is the study of electron mechanics. ... Software engineering is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software. ... An automaton (plural: automata) is a self-operating machine. ... A hybrid system consists of both discrete signals and continuous signals. ...

A typical mechatronics Venn diagram, Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of several engineering disciplines.

Mechatronics is centred on mechanics, electronics and computing which, combined, make possible the generation of simpler, more economical, reliable and versatile systems. The portmanteau "mechatronics" was first coined by Mr. Tetsuro Mori, a senior engineer of the Japanese company Yaskawa, in 1969. Mechatronics may alternatively be referred to as "electromechanical systems" or less often as "control and automation engineering". Image File history File links MechatronicsDiagram. ... Engineering cybernetics deals with the question of control engineering of mechatronic systems. It is used to control or regulate such a system; see control theory. Through collaboration the mechatronic modules perform the production goals and inherit flexible and agile manufacturing properties in the production scheme. Modern production equipment consists of mechatronic modules that are integrated according to a control architecture. The most known architectures involve hierarchy, polyarchy, heterarchy and hybrid. The methods for achieving a technical effect are described by control algorithms, which may or may not utilize formal methods in their design. Hybrid-systems important to Mechatronics include production systems, synergy-drives, planetary-rovers, automotive subsystems such as anti-lock braking systems, spin-assist and every day equipment such as autofocus cameras, video, hard disks, CD-players, washing machines, etc. Engineering cybernetics deals with the question of control engineering of mechatronic systems. ... Engineering is the design, analysis, and/or construction of works for practical purposes. ... In engineering and mathematics, control theory deals with the behavior of dynamical systems. ... Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering (mecha for mechanisms), electronic engineering (tronics for electronics), and software engineering. ... A hierarchy (in Greek: , it is derived from -hieros, sacred, and -arkho, rule) is a system of ranking and organizing things or people, where each element of the system (except for the top element) is subordinate to a single other element. ... Polyarchy (Greek: poly many, arkhe rule) has long been used to mean the opposite of monarchy, i. ... A heterarchy is a network of elements which share the same horizontal position of power and authority, each having an equal vote. ... // This article is about a biological term. ... In computer science, formal methods refers to a variety of scientific and engineering techniques for rigorous reasoning about the correctness of computer programs, chiefly based on the use of mathematical logic. ... A typical mechatronic engineering degree would involve classes in engineering mathematics, mechanics, machine component design, mechanical design, thermodynamics, circuits and systems, electronics and communications, control theory, digital signal processing, power engineering, robotics and usually a final year thesis. Variant of this field

An emerging variant of this field is biomechatronics, whose purpose is to integrate machine and man, usually in the form of removable gadgets such as exoskeleton. This is the “real-life” version of cyberware. Biomechatronics is an applied interdisciplinary science which aims to integrate mechanical elements in the human body, both for therapeutic (artificial hearts) and augmentation (mainly military uses for the moment) reasons. ... An exoskeleton, in contrast to an endoskeleton, is an external anatomical feature that supports and protects an animals body. ... Cyberware is a relatively new and unknown field. ...

Growth

Mechatronics in the last 5 years has grown massively accross Europe. High employement levels are likely to be the norm in the coming decade. Gradutes with a good grounding and understanding in this field can look to earn two times the average salary and more if they have atleast an HND -(Higher National Diploma)- in this field. It is often found that within this industry especially that general knowledge of the field is more important to employers than qualifications of the applicant. As a general rule less time in study, more time in pratice often leads to greater knowledge and job prospects with regard to Mechatronics.
