Plot

The Medal of Honor series puts the player in the boots of an Allied combatant during World War II, with weaponry appropriate to the time period. The player fights for the United States, and the main character's name is James 'Jimmy' Steven Patterson. The games are often characterized by linear gameplay through recognizable WWII-era areas of conflict, which is sometimes presented in a cinematic tone (e.g., inspiration from modern films like Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line and Enemy at the Gates and the television miniseries Band of Brothers is obvious, since the game was 'created' by Steven Spielberg). In general, allies are people or groups that have joined an alliance and are working together to achieve some common purpose. ... James S. It marked Terrence Malicks return to filmmaking after a twenty year absence. ... Enemy at the Gates is a 2001 motion picture directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, starring Jude Law and Ed Harris. ... Band of Brothers is an acclaimed 10-part television miniseries set during World War II, co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. ... Steven Allan Spielberg KBE (born December 18, 1946)[1] is an American film director and producer. ...

In the later games in the series, the artificial intelligence (AI) of the enemies and fellow soldiers have been notorious for being under current FPS expectations. The violence is bloodless and simple, usually consisting of elaborate animations.

Controversy

In Germany, the MOH series is a controversial video game because of its delicate subject matter (WWII). The game is uncensored in terms of flags, and the swastika can often be found. This conflicts with German laws which state that the swastika may only be used in historical references. The game was put on the index of youth endangering media by the German BPjM in 2000, making it only available for people over 18; advertising for it had to be discontinued. Critics say that games such as Grand Theft Auto 3 advocate real-life crimes, like carjacking. ... A right-facing Swastika in a decorative Hindu form The swastika (from Sanskrit ) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing () or left-facing () forms. ... This article has been translated, and needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency. ... 2000 (MM) was a leap year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar. ...

Ever since the controversy that "Medal of Honor" had raised back in 1999/2000, EA has taken precautions to eliminate all the "Nazism" content before releasing it to the German market. This often results in the removal/change of all "Nazi" flags, swastikas, and on some occasions the "blood puff" (the effect that takes place when the player shoots another player) from the games build.

Gameplay

The gameplay originally focused on behind-enemy-lines intelligence gathering, or some other type of special missions, placing emphasis on using false papers and silenced pistols, but as the series (and the technology) has progressed, it has shifted emphasis towards front-line combat, and has now almost completely abandoned the original focus. The last time false papers were used was in Frontline. Since the release of European Assault the series has focused on providing a more open-ended element to the games, allowing the player to have more options in each level and getting away from one linear path. Reception

The overall critical response towards the 'Medal of Honor' series has been quite impressive up to the release of 'Rising Sun', in which the game received mixed (poor/moderate) reviews due to its simple A.I., short game length, and repetitive gameplay along with a poor story that failed to back up the game's atmosphere. Following 'Rising Sun' in the series was 'Pacific Assault' for the PC. Overall the game was well received for its single-player aspect but was praised by it's lack luster multi-player, which launched with "horrible network capabilities" resulting in hefty amounts of lag and bugs. Ever since 'Pacific Assault' the series has been releasing game after game of "console only" titles that often received moderate and poor reviews by most critics, resulting in such reviews with opinions like; "...the Medal of Honor series is the same thing over and over again...", "...a poor mans Call of Duty..." and "...WW2 games are a dime a dozen, but Medal of Honor isn't worth 40 bucks...". Partly because all the recent Medal of Honor games lacked any form of online capabilities, but mostly because the series became repetitive and lacking any innovation in its core "gameplay formula". The latest title "Vanguard" has been viewed by most fans and critics as "a poor gaming experience with about 5-8 hours of repetitive gameplay", no online multi-player, and "muddy graphics". Which resulted in ratings such as the mediocre 5.5 from Gamespot.com and a average 7.2 from IGN.com. Although not all of the titles after "Rising Sun" have been poorly reviewed. The recent PSP title "Heroes" received the "best FPS award of 2006" for the PSP by IGN.com, and is expecting a sequel Nov 6, 2007 for the PSP and the Wii.

Featuring Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault Review at ActionTrip (1208 words)
During that time, between the releases of the two Medal of Honor games, a new franchise was born, the Call of Duty franchise, which follows the same principles as the MoH games, but has taken the shooter sub-genre to a whole new level of intensity and immersion.
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault does bring certain novelties to the genre, but you will only notice them if you played every other WWII shooter that was released in the past two years - which I have.
I guess the biggest downside to Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is that sometimes the enemy AI as well as that of your own soldiers would act a little erratic, or exhibit slight path finding issues.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - ESCMag Review (1104 words)
This kind of detail is everywhere in Medal of Honor, both in the non-player characters and the environments in which they fight.
Medal of Honor pulls everything it can out of the Quake III engine, and while there are occasionally a few flat textures — most notably tree branches that stick out like they were cut from cardboard — the game comes off looking beautiful, or at least as beautiful as a blasted-out WWII palette can be.
Medal of Honor does an excellent job with a tricky subject, and manages to capture the atmosphere of the Second World War without smothering the gameplay with its gravity.
