Medford is a census-designated place located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 21,985.


Geography

Medford is located at 40°49'4" North, 72°59'10" West (40.817733, -72.986125)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 27.3 km˛ (10.5 mi˛). 27.3 km˛ (10.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,985 people, 6,791 households, and 5,629 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 806.1/km˛ (2,088.5/mi˛). There are 6,939 housing units at an average density of 254.4/km˛ (659.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 89.18% White, 3.98% African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.11% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. 10.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,791 households out of which 42.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.1% are non-families. 13.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.23 and the average family size is 3.52.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $67,153, and the median income for a family is $70,493. Males have a median income of $46,485 versus $30,427 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,579. 3.3% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
