Mediaset chairman: Bill is 'devastating' - Boston.com (246 words)
Mediaset SpA would suffer "devastating damage" from a new media bill proposed by the Italian center-left government, company chairman Fedele Confalonieri said Wednesday, according to Italian news agencies.
The draft legislation would require Mediaset, founded by former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, and rival state broadcaster RAI each to move one of their three networks on to digital terrestrial broadcast within 15 months of the approval of the law.
The government said the bill is aimed at opening the market to competitors and establishing new rules for the shift from analog to digital terrestrial broadcasting, set for 2012, in an attempt to boost pluralism of media ownership in Italy.
