Medina is a village located in Orleans County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 6,415.


The Village of Medina was incorporated in 1832. The Erie Canal passed through the village. Parts of the village lie in the Towns of Shelby and Ridgeway.

Geography

Medina is located at 43°13'11" North, 78°23'24" West (43.219808, -78.390101)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.7 km˛ (3.3 mi˛). 8.5 km˛ (3.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 2.39% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,415 people, 2,567 households, and 1,576 families residing in the village. The population density is 757.4/km˛ (1,962.1/mi˛). There are 2,796 housing units at an average density of 330.1/km˛ (855.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 87.89% White, 7.56% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.62% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 3.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,567 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% are married couples living together, 15.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 32.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.07.


In the village the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.3 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $30,300, and the median income for a family is $37,857. Males have a median income of $31,857 versus $21,633 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,138. 16.4% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
