Launch and Early History

Meetro launched on June 1st, 2005. On August 14th, 2005, Slashdot reported a rumour that Meetro was in talks to be bought out by search giant Google. Paul Bragiel, CEO of Meetroduction, has stated that the whole story was nothing more than 'rumors' although the publicity did bring a wave of new users to the instant messenger software's userbase. Google Inc. ... Meetroduction is the Palo Alto, California-based company behind the LBS messenger Meetro. ...

How it Works

Meetro differs from the other popular messengers in that users can input location specifications to see other online users in surrounding areas. Its location finder currently supports most locations in the USA and Europe and is expanding to include other locations. Users unable to obtain a location can input latitude and longitude details to see how far away other online users are at a particular moment. Europe is conventionally considered one of the seven continents of Earth which, in this case, is more a cultural and political distinction than a physiographic one, leading to various perspectives about Europes borders. ...

Meetro works by actively scanning for the MAC addresses of wireless access points around a user's location. Then Meetro contacts the main database server and compares the MAC address to a list of known access points. Subsequently it does some mathematical calculations to determine the latitude and longitude location. Once Meetro has calculated the general area (usually a quarter mile) of a user's physical location, it then compares it to others users and displays who's online within a quarter mile, half mile, mile, etc.. In computer networking a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier attached to most forms of networking equipment. ... Latitude, usually denoted symbolically by the Greek letter φ, gives the location of a place on Earth north or south of the Equator. ... Longitude, sometimes denoted by the Greek letter λ, describes the location of a place on Earth east or west of a north-south line called the Prime Meridian. ...

Features

Meetro allows users to create personalized groups within the client. These groups can be configured to show a specific subset of Meetro users grouped by any combination of: Status (away/available), Gender (male, female, unspecified), Minimum Distance, Maximum Distance, Keywords, Relation (friend, friend of a friend, unrelated, MeetroHQ). For example, you can create a group that includes all users that are between 3 and 4 miles away and are currently online.

Meetro allows users to create custom profile pages and photographs as they desire. The Meetro program is different from other messenger programs as it does not allow "bots" to gain access to the program and infiltrate it with false profiles. [citation needed]

Many Meetro users have also created their own custom and/or location based groups (that link to external web entities) based on the information that they have provided within their user profiles.
