Just like the other "classic" Game Boy games in the series (except MMV), the game is a type of combination of features from two corresponding NES games. In this case, the game combines the gameplay of Mega Man 3 (including the slide and the three Rush items), but in the beginning, the player fights Robot Masters from Mega Man 2. Story

After beating the four Robot Masters, the player heads to Wily's fortress where he has to fight four Robot Masters from Mega Man 3. Here however, instead of a Stage Select screen, the bosses are selected by jumping in to a teleporter, similar to those in other Mega Man games but different in that the player has to complete an entire stage before reaching the Robot Master.
