Melbourne Aquarium is an aquarium in central Melbourne, founded in 1999. It is the worlds only southern ocean aquarium [citation needed] and you can see animals here you will not find anywhere else.[citation needed] It is known for its shark exhibit, featuring huge Grey Nurse and Broadnose sevengill sharks in the worlds largest fishbowl and the many diverse species it contains. There are also temporary exhibitions that frequently come to the aquarium. On Sunday 11th November Melbourne Aquarium celebrated Georgie the Grey nurse shark's 10th birthday with a celebratory party.

Melbourne Aquarium is home to the worlds first pregnant sea snake it was on display in the coral atoll, with two other snakes but has since been moved to a holding tank in the back-of-house area of the aquarium. Melbourne Aquarium had the world's only giant squid exhibit. This has been moved to the UnderWaterWorld, Queensland. A quote from their website: "The 7 metre squid is frozen in time in the world’s largest man-made block of ice and is on display as part of the Monsters of the Deep exhibit. Expansion

The Melbourne is currently undergoing a significant expansion that will extend it all the way from the Yarra River, to Flinders Street. A new entrance will be built on the corner of Flinders and King street. The new expansion will feature an exhibit staring Antarctic King penguins and Gentoo Penguins, as well as many other Antarctic fish, a fist for Australia. The exhibits will feature real ice and snow to simulate Antarctic conditions, and will take visitors on an expedition to Antarctica. The penguins are being sourced from Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World in New Zealand. The expansion is already well underway and is expected to be completed in the later half of 2008. Melbourne Aquarium is open from 9.30am until 6.00pm daily. They are open every day of the year including public holidays. Last admissions are 1 hour prior to closing times. They recommend approximately 2 to 2.5 hours for your exciting journey through.


From 1st - 26th January Melbourne Aquarium is open from 9.30am until 9.00pm.
