Early in the game Melchior appears as a swordsmith in 1000 A.D. Initially he plays a relatively minor role, hinting that you should come to "visit me sometime" (however, he lives on a continent out of your reach until a later point in the game). Melchior becomes a factor in the court hearing for the main character, Crono. The Kingdom of Guardia accuses Crono of kidnapping Princess Nadia (who gave Crono a fake name, "Marle"). Melchior plays a role in one of several actions you take after meeting her that can work against (or for) Crono. If one speaks to Melchior, he will ask the player to try and convince Marle to sell her pendant to him. Agreeing to ask her would later be used against the player by witnesses who assert Crono was interested in Marle's money. 1000 A.D. 1000 A.D. is a time period in Squaresofts Chrono Trigger. ... Because Melchior is a swordsmith, later in the game you must again see him in an effort to repair the Masamune, the sword needed to defeat the wizard Magus. Melchior, shocked that you have managed to get your hands on the Masamune, informs you that dreamstone is necessary to fix the blade. He claims that the red rock was used as money "a long time ago", and he tells you that you might not be able to find any. It is later revealed that Melchior is not of 1000 A.D.; he was actually the Guru of Life, a respected personage of the Kingdom of Zeal. However, upon the awakening of Lavos he was sucked into a time portal, along with the Guru of Reason, the Guru of Time, and Janus. Whereas the Guru of Reason (Belthasar) was deposited in 2300 A.D., the Guru of Time (Gaspar) went to the End of Time, and Janus (later known as Magus) went to 600 A.D., Melchior was sent to 1000 A.D. 1000 A.D. 1000 A.D. is a time period in Squaresofts Chrono Trigger. ... It is evident that up to this point Queen Zeal considered the Gurus (and perhaps her own children) a threat to her power, and their final banishment across time was the sort of convienient disposal that she wanted. But even before this Melchior and the other Gurus had been imprisoned or silenced in some manner. Though the player does not directly explore the circumstances surrounding the others, Melchior is actually freed by Crono and the party. For having opposed the Queen, he was imprisoned within a crystal shell at the top of Mount Woe, a floating peak that was chained to the earthbound village far below the Kingdom of Zeal. Upon defeating the guardian, Giga Gaia, the party rescued Melchoir. It is clear that he has no recollection of who Crono or the others are. As the player travels through time, one must realize that in the age of Zeal, Melchior has not yet been sent to 1000 A.D., and he couldn't possibly have met them. However, instinctively trusting Crono and the others, this "past Melchior" agrees to assist in the attack on the newly-completed Ocean Palace. He plays an integral role in the apparent destruction of the Mammon Machine.

Foreshadowing his later role as a swordsmith, Melchior presents Crono with a “ruby knife”. This is said to be made of the same stone as the Mammon Machine, and is capable of destroying it. As Crono lodges the blade into the machine, the knife is transformed into a sword, which one of the characters (depending on who is in the party during the cut scene) recognizes as the Masamune. It’s also noticeable that Masa and Mune, the two spirits of the sword, speak as the blade is about to be thrust into the machine. This asserts Melchior as the original maker of the Masamune. Melchior’s claim that the Masamune is made of dreamstone also seems to indicate that the “ruby knife” and the Mammon Machine are also constructed of the same material.

Melchior plays other roles in the side quests near the end of the game. Notably he examines the Rainbow Shell and uses it to construct powerful weapons and armor for the party. Bringing him the sun stone will also allow him to create a powerful alloy, with which he creates the Rainbow Sword, the strongest weapon that can be utilized by Crono.

Melchior's name is taken from a biblical reference. Melchior was the name of one of the three Magi who visited the infant Jesus. While the Gurus Belthasar and Gaspar have names that are slight variations of the equivalent, Melchior's name is identical to his biblical counterpart.
