Agriculture is important, and the extensive lowland areas in the almost flat valley near the river Gaula are dominated by grain fields. The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Melhus (Norse Meðalhúsar), since the first church was built there. The first element is meðal 'middle', the last element is the plural form of hús n 'house'.
