Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) is the title given to any one of the 129 individuals elected to serve in the Scottish Parliament. MSPs are elected in one of two ways: (1) that they are returned by the first past the post electoral system to represent an individual constituency (73 are elected in this manner); or (2) that they are returned by the additional members system to represent a region made up of a number of individual constituencies (56 are elected in this manner, across 8 regions of 7 members each). All MSP positions become vacant for elections on a four year cycle. If a vacancy arises at another time, due to death or resignation, then it may be filled in one of two ways, depending of whether the vacancy is for a first-past-the-post constituency MSP or for an additional-member regional MSP.


A constituency vacancy may be filled by a by-election. A regional vacancy may be filled by the next available candidate on the relevant party list. A by-election or bye-election is a special election held to fill a political office when the incumbent has died or resigned. ...

The Scottish Parliament (PĂ rlamaid na h-Alba in Gaelic, Scots Pairlament in Scots) is the national unicameral legislature of Scotland, in the capital Edinburgh.
The Parliament was temporarily relocated to the former Strathclyde Regional Council debating chamber in Glasgow in May 2000, and to the University of Aberdeen in May 2002.
At the first meeting of the parliament on 12 May 1999, Winnie Ewing (the Mother of Parliament or "Oldest Qualified Member" as she was described in the Official Report of debates) declared that the "Scottish Parliament which adjourned on 25 March 1707, is hereby reconvened".
