Encyclopedia > Mengli Ghiray

Mengli Ghiray (Crimean Tatar: Meñli Giray) (d. 1515) was a khan of Crimean Khanate since 1468. Mengli Ghiray was the youngest son of the khanate founder Haci Giray. During his rule, in 1475 the khanate became a vassal of Ottoman Empire. Mengli Ghiray led wars agaist Big Horde Akhmat Khan and his sons, which he finally won in 1502 with help of Sultan Beyazid II and Grand Duke Ivan III of Russia. Saray, the capital of Big Horde, was destroyed, never to recover again. Mengli Ghiray also led wars against Poland and Moldavia, and in the later years against Muscovy.


The throne was passed to his oldest son Mehmed I Giray.
