June 12, 2005 09:48 AM The premise has two distinct parts: (1) the issue of so-called menial work (which is not necessarily an affront to human dignity, BUT more than a few companies manage these jobs in a way that is an affront to such), and (2) the issue of no or limited mobility.
In the menial jobs that I have held I have never run into an employer who wanted “to keep me where I was in my forays into acquiring new skills and knowledge.” Those types of employers actually didn’t care about me enough.
