This means that on Mercator’s projection, countries nearer the pole are stretched sideways, in an east-west direction.

This means the ship has to change course as she goes along, from about 050º at the start, to 104º as she approaches the English Channel.
Mercator (274 words)
The ship MERCATOR was allocated to the specially founded non-profit organisation Mercator, whose task it was to maintain the ship in its original condition, to organise an exposition relating to the ship's history and Belgian maritime education on board and to open the ship to the public.
MERCATOR was open to the public for nearly 40 years and was also kept in her original state as much as possible thanks to the good care of the Mercator organisation.
However, when the ship’s ownership was transferred from the Belgian Government to the Flemish Region, efforts were made to protect it as a monument of historic value.
