Mercedes Bresso (born on 12 July 1944) is an Italian politician and President of the Piedmont Region. She is a member of the Democrats of the Left party (coming from the Italian Communist Party). After her election as governor of Piedmont, she resigned from the office as Member of European Parliament. She is a Grand Officer of the Italian Republic. From 1989 onwards, Bresso is a member of the provincial, regional and national party executives of the Democrats of the Left. In 1995-2004, she was the Chairperson of the Turin Province Council, and, a Member of Regional Council (1985-1995) and of the Regional Executive (1994-1995) with responsibility for regional planning in Piedmont.
