The Mercury Mystique was a compact car produced by the Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company from 1995 to 2000. It was a rebadged version of the North American Ford Contour and the international Ford Mondeo. It debuted as a 1995 model year, replacing the Mercury Topaz. The Topaz was available as a two-door coupe and four-door sedan, whereas the Mystique was four-door only. The Topaz sold far better than the Mystique.[citation needed] Image File history File links Metadata Size of this preview: 800 Ã 410 pixelsFull resolution (2092 Ã 1072 pixel, file size: 226 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg) File history Legend: (cur) = this is the current file, (del) = delete this old version, (rev) = revert to this old version. ...

Pre-facelift Mercury Mystique The Mystique went into production on August 15, 1994 and ended on December 23, 1999. Poor customer acceptance, various mechanical ailments, such as constant stalling that baffled technicians, and its short life led to the nickname "the Mercury Mistake". As a result, a used Mystique can be purchased for much less than similar used cars from competing companies, such as the Chrysler Cirrus or Honda Accord. A major downside of the Mystique was its lack of rear legroom, bested by smaller cars such as the Honda Civic. Why did the Mystique fail? While its dimensions were only slightly larger than the Mercury Tracer, its price approached the mid-sized Mercury Sable. As a result, many customers were willing to just pay the extra money for a boost in space and comfort by buying the Sable[citation needed]. Replacements
There was no successor in the United States, although its international cousin, the Ford Mondeo, is still in production worldwide. In Canada and Mexico, where the Mercury brand was phased out, the Mystique (as well as the Contour and Escort) was replaced by the Ford Focus [2]. Only the Mercury Milan (introduced in 2006) could be considered a viable American replacement for the Mystique, where it is proving much more popular and more reliable.
