The actions and behavior of mermen can vary wildly depending on the source and time period of the stories. They have been said to sink ships by summoning great storms, but also said to be wise teachers, according to earlier mythology.
The most well-known merman was probably Triton, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. Although Amphitrite gave birth to a merman, neither Poseidon nor Amphitrite were merfolk, although both were able to live under water as easily as on land. Triton was also known as the Trumpeter of the Sea for his usage of a conch shell.
Merfolk are the most common aquatic race on Aquela, found throughout the waters of the Lesser Rift and the Ataqim archipelago.
Merfolk adventurers are often frustrated by this head-in-the-sand attitude, and leave their communities to face threats or explore regions that their kinsfolk would prefer simply to ignore.
Merfolk suffer double damage from fire, and are instinctually terrified of it.
Merfolk have a gill system similar to that of an ordinary fish - slits in the neck region of the mer are lined with a rich greenish membrane which filters the oxygen content of the water directly into the copper-based blood system of the merperson.
Merfolk protect the whales in their area but seem to have no concept of personal property, other than the food they are individually able to catch.
There the merfolk seems to gather at times, when the fish is supposed to lay its eggs into the turbulent, but shallow water between the rocks.
