Meridian is a city in Bosque County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Bosque CountyGR6. The naming of Meridian is doubt since no longitudinal meridians are anywhere near the town. Local residents, as well as those in surrounding Bosque County pronounce the town's name as "Merr-EE'-dee-an" not"Merr-IDD'-ee-an." There were 600 housing units at an average density of 107.3/km² (277.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.43% White, 5.37% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 8.18% from other races, and 2.68% from two or more races. Meridian, the county seat of Bosque County, is on the North Bosque River, the Santa Fe rail line, and State highways 6, 22, 144, and 174, forty-seven miles northwest of Waco near the center of the county.
The ninety-eighth meridian, however, passes through only a tiny portion of the northwestern corner of Bosque County; nonetheless, the most likely explanation is that the commissioners believed their town lay near a meridian.
