Merit is a concept in Buddhism, and particularly in Theravada Buddhism. Buddhists seek to accumulate merit so as to gain a higher state of life after reincarnation, as part of the ascent of the soul towards bodhi (enlightenment) and then nirvana (the final dissolution of self). Merit can be gained in a number of ways. monks earn merit through meditation, chanting and other rituals. Lay people gain merit by worshipping the Buddha and giving food to Buddhist monks or money to a temple. Merit can also be gained through acts of charity, or by acting in a moral manner generally, and by teaching, preaching, pilgrimages and missionary work on behalf of Buddhism.
