In Greek mythology, several distinct people shared the name Merops

  1. King of Ethiopia, husband of Clymene, father of Pandareus and stepfather of Phaethon son of Helios.
  2. King of Percote, had two sons who were killed at the Trojan War by Diomedes
  3. King of Cos, after the death of his wife, he grieved so hard Hera placed him among the stars.

Merops is also the genus name of the bee-eater.
