When Gretzky was traded to the LA Kings, Messier emerged as a leader for the Oilers scoring a career high in points and leading them to a Stanley Cup victory in 1990.
As the Oilers continued to dump salaries, Messier was traded to the New York Rangers for Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice, and Louie Debrusk.
Messier moved on to the Vancouver Canucks in 1997, a move that did not yield the desired results.
Messier learned, for example, that his ancestors owned 130 acres of land in Montreal on what is today the campus of McGill University, land that "all went when the British took over," he laughs.
Messier was accompanied by his wife Doris, who died in 2004, and aided by his daughters, Karen, who typed the manuscript, and Kathleen, who helped on the computer and who will accompany him on a proposed trip to France later this year.
Messier is having a profound effect on budding historians of all ages.
