Encyclopedia > Metopon

Metopon (5-methylhydromorphone hydrochloride) is an opiate analogue that is a methylated derivative of hydromorphone which was invented in 1948 as an analgesic. [1] In medicine, the term opiate describes any of the narcotic alkaloids found in opium. ... Hydromorphone is a drug used to relieve moderate to severe pain. ... An analgesic (colloquially known as a painkiller) is any member of the diverse group of drugs used to relieve pain (achieve analgesia). ...

Metopon is sometimes used in medicine, but although longer acting than hydromorphone, metopon is less potent and has poor oral bioavailability, so generally has few advantages to distinguish it from other, more commonly used opioid analgesics. [2] It has similar side effects to other opiates, which include itching, nausea and respiratory depression. An itch (Latin: pruritus) is a sensation felt on an area of skin that makes a person or animal want to scratch it. ... For other uses, see Nausea (disambiguation). ... In medicine, hypoventilation exists when ventilation is inadequate to perform gas exchange. ...

Drugs as Opiates, Drugs as Research Tools (421 words)
Metopon, a potent opiate painkiller, was among his most notable contributions.
With metopon, partial separation of the painkilling effects from the undesired addictive property was at last achieved.
Early studies on metopon showed it produced a less severe addiction than morphine and other opiates.
UNODC - Bulletin on Narcotics - 1952 Issue 4 - 004 (5349 words)
As far as the authors have been able to learn, for four of these nine narcotics there has been no previous publication of any article dealing particularly with their identification as it may have to be made by narcotic or drug chemists.
For metopon, colour tests were previously given, in the first article of this series[9] and the crystal reactions given here are the first reported crystal tests.
In the present study it was found, with the exception of metopon, that most of the synthetic narcotics of the diarylpiperidine, alkanoneamine and hydrophenanthrene groups undergo the metathetical type of reaction.
