The Metropolitan Borough of Lambeth was a metropolitan borough under London County Council from 1899 to 1965.


It covered the area of Lambeth, Kennington, Vauxhall, Brixton and Norwood. In 1965 it amalgamated with parts of the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth to form the London Borough of Lambeth.

The boundaries of the manor and the parish of Lambeth are largely the same as the present borough but with the addition of the old parishes of Streatham and Clapham.
The manor of Lambeth belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1190.
Lambeth Palace sat opposite the Palace of Westminster and the two were linked by a horse ferry across the Thames.

LAMBETH, a southern metropolitan borough of London, England, bounded N.W. by the river Thames, N.E. by Southwark, E. by Camberwell and W. by Wandsworth and Battersea, and extending S. to the boundary of the county of London.
Four road-bridges cross the Thames within the limits of the borough, namely Waterloo, Westminster, Lambeth and Vauxhall, of which the first, a fine stone structure, dates from 1817, and is the oldest Thames bridge standing within the county of London.
The borough council consists of a mayor, to aldermen and 60 councillors.
