Santiago Metropolitan Region is a landlocked administrative region in central Chile. It is the country's most populated region. It contains the nation's capital, Santiago. Most commerce and administrative centers are located in this region, including Chile's main international airport Arturo Merino Benítez.
The aptly-named MetropolitanaRegion surrounds Chilescapital city of Santiago ; a modern metropolis with a population of 5.5 million.
Surrounded entirely by mountains, the MetropolitanaRegion is considered to be a transitional area between the hot, arid regions to the north, and the lush Central Valley which begins in this region and extends south.
Because of its mountainous surroundings, the Metropolitana climate is not affected by coastal influences.
