Mexitli was a legendary great leader and war god of the Aztecs (before they became known as the Mexica, possibly in his honour). The name derives from the Nahuatl metztli (the moon) and xictli (navel) and thus means "navel (probably implying 'child') of the moon"

When the Spaniards encountered this people and transcribed their language, they naturally did so according to the spelling rules of the Castilian language of the time.
