According to an urban myth, during a Test match between the West Indies and England when Holding was to bowl to English player Peter Willey, the commentator at the time, Brian Johnston, described the action as "The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey". A less amusing incident for which Holding is also remembered was kicking over the stumps in anger at an umpiring decision in New Zealand in 1979/80. Holding felt that the umpiring had been incompetent and against him throughout. After one decision by the West Indian bête noir, umpire Fred Goodall, Holding turned and sent the stumps flying with a kick that would not disgrace a rugby fullback attempting a penalty kick. It was captured on film, and remains an enduring image of a less than savoury event for world cricket. Frederick Robert Goodall (born 1938) was an international cricket umpire from New Zealand who officiated in 24 Tests and 15 one-day internationals between 1965 and 1988. ...

Despite modest batting talent he did it with exuberance. He holds the record for the most sixes in a Test career for any player with fewer than 1000 career runs. He hit 36 sixes in his Test career, placing him at 32 in the all-time list. Remarkably almost a quarter of his Test runs came by way of sixes.

A temperamental player, his career was marked by constant injury. He only managed to take 249 Test wickets in total. A small feat by today's standards.

Nowadays, speculation is rife that he suffers from some condition of opthalmopathy as he is often seen with dark shades at all times, securely strapped to his neck.

Holding Hands Drabbles (710 words)
Michael could only think one thing.  He knew it was going to get him in trouble, but he couldn’t help it.
Bonnie had been working on Kitt all night and needed a break, so Michael suggested a little stargazing.  They walked part of the way down the semi’s ramp together before he hopped over the side.  He offered his hand to help her and was stunned when she didn’t let go after jumping down herself.
Michael sat next to her on the bed, careful not to crowd her or move the rolling table where she was resting her hand against an icepack.  She slowly lifted her arm, probably to let her hand warm a bit.
CD Baby: MICHAEL MCCARTHY: Michael McCarthy & the Beautiful Fools (846 words)
Michael’s assertive honey glazed rasp of a voice reveals a wise beyond his years perspective that is honest and sincere.
Upon the release of his highly-anticipated EP this past June 2004, Michael was hand-picked to play guitar on Haylie Duff's cross-country summer tour, playing to packed arenas of screaming kids every night as she supported her sister Hilary Duff.
I met Michael at a music seminar in 2005 and was glad to be able to sit next to him for most of it.
