M-46 is an east-west highway between Muskegon and Port Sanilac, reaching Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
Except for the uncharacteristic north-south segment that corresponds with the US 131 freeway between Cedar Springs and Howard City it is practically a due east-west surface highway, little of it divided.
For motorists north of the Grand Rapids-Lansing-Flint corridor it is a major highway, in part because Saginaw is the largest city on its route.
