Michael Mackey was born in Castleconnell, County Limerick on July 12, 1912. He first played at senior level for Limerick in 1930, aged 18. In the 1936 Munster final against Tipperary he scored a record five goals and three points, and he captained Limerick to All-Ireland victory that year and in 1940, having previously won an All-Ireland medal with the successful 1934 side.
