A microchannel plate detector is a type of detector used in mass spectrometry which is closely related to an electron multiplier. Microchannel plates usually consist of an array of small electronmultiplier type channels that are chevron (v-like) in shape. Ions may enter one of the channels through a small orifice and are gauranteed to hit the wall of the channel due to the channel being at an angle to the plate and the angle of impact. The impact starts a cascade of electrons that propagates through the channel as the channel abruptly turns its angle in the opposite direction (at the bottom of the "V"). The electrons exit the chevron on the opposite side where they are themselves detected by additional means.
