Encyclopedia > Microchannel plate

A microchannel plate detector is a type of detector used in mass spectrometry which is closely related to an electron multiplier. Microchannel plates usually consist of an array of small electronmultiplier type channels that are chevron (v-like) in shape. Ions may enter one of the channels through a small orifice and are gauranteed to hit the wall of the channel due to the channel being at an angle to the plate and the angle of impact. The impact starts a cascade of electrons that propagates through the channel as the channel abruptly turns its angle in the opposite direction (at the bottom of the "V"). The electrons exit the chevron on the opposite side where they are themselves detected by additional means. Mass spectrometry is a technique for separating ions by their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios. ... An electron multiplier multiplies charge. ...

Method of manufacturing microchannel plate having rounded input faces - Patent 4025328 (1602 words)
A microchannel plate for secondary electron emission intensification, having channel walls which are rounded so as to increase the interception of secondary electrons formed due to the incidence of primary electrons on the ends of the said channel walls.
In a photoelectric device wherein, for example, use is made of an intensifier element in the form of a microchannel plate, part of the primary electrons emitted by the photocathode thus collide at the input of the channel plate with the end faces of the walls of the channels.
In all embodiments of a microchannel plate having rounded channel ends it is possible to enhance the interception on the input of the microchannel plate and to increase the effectivenss of the detection.

Bias angle - The bias angle of a microchannel plate is the angle of the channels from the perpendicular or normal to the MCP surface.
Microchannel plates can be customised in a number of ways to enhance the detection efficiency or, in some cases, to lower the detection efficiency for a particular desired or undesired species that might be present in the instrument 0 the experiment.
Microchannel plates used around the world are manufactured with pores as large as 100 microns and now as small as five microns.
