Middletown Township is a township located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 66,327.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 153.7 km² (59.3 mi²). 106.5 km² (41.1 mi²) of it is land and 47.2 km² (18.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.72% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 66,327 people, 23,236 households, and 18,100 families residing in the township. The population density is 622.8/km² (1,613.0/mi²). There are 23,841 housing units at an average density of 223.9/km² (579.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 94.71% White, 1.21% African American, 0.07% Native American, 2.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 3.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 23,236 households out of which 37.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.3% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.1% are non-families. 18.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.27.


In the township the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.


The median income for a household in the township is $75,566, and the median income for a family is $86,124. Males have a median income of $60,755 versus $36,229 for females. The per capita income for the township is $34,196. 3.1% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
