Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, to mother Rita Garvey Capuano and father Andrew Capuano, Michael attended Somerville High School, and graduated in 1969. In 1973, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College, and in 1977, a law degree from Boston College Law School. Political career

Serving the same seat his father once held, Capuano served as Alderman for Ward Five in Somerville from 1977 to 1979. Later, he became Alderman-at-Large, holding the position for two terms (1985 to 1989). Capuano then went on to become mayor of Somerville from January 1990 through December 1998. An alderman is a member of a municipal legislative body in a town or city with many jurisdictions. ... Capuano is married to Barbara Teebagy Capuano. Barbara, also a Somerville High School graduate, received her B.S. from Boston College in 1974, later earned her MBA from Babson College in 1976, and eventually became a certified public accountant.
