Mike attended Schaumburg High School and was a member of the band Jodie; he and future bandmate William Beckett were rivals in the local music scene. When Jodie broke up, Mike and William began to talk about music and eventually, in Mike's junior year, formed The Academy, which released a self-titled EP through LLR Recordings (run by Mike and William's friends Johnny Minardi and Tony Marino).[2] Mike played rhythm guitar at this point. Mike did not attend college, opting instead to focus on music, which he says did not please his family at first.
