History

Before entering the world of music, he won the Nuyorican Poets Café Slam and was published in the 1996 protest tome In Defense of Mumia. In 1997, he released his first album (on Scratchie) entitled Easy Listening 4 Armageddon. For his next two releases (Welcome To The Afterfuture LP and Vernacular Homicide EP) , he concluded a deal with Ozone Music. Afterwards he began a trilogy staging a battle between the good and the evil (represented by The Infesticons and Majesticons, respectively), which the two first LPs were released on Big Dada in 2000 (Gun Hill Road) and 2003 (Beauty Party).His last record Father Divine has been released on ROIR and co-produced by Gymkhana. He currently lives in Paris with his wife and kid. With pianist and composer Vijay Iyer he released a song cycle about the post-9/11 world In What Language?, in 2003. Ladd's lyrics are no easier to classify than he is. Those lines — which revel in the self-celebration, internal rhyme, and rampant simile characteristic of hip-hop, plus a range of allusion that stretches from antiquity into the 1960s — also scan as iambic pentameter.
Ladd crosses the Concourse, carefully, several times a day — moving between the apartment he shares with writer and actor Mums, who plays a character named Poet on the HBO prison drama Oz, and the apartment of Fred Ones, who engineers much of Ladd's music in his home studio.
Ladd is working today on his contribution to an album that a friend is producing —; a compilation of instrumental hip-hop tracks with time-signatures other than the standard 2/4 and 4/4.
