Nolan's Philosophy

Early in public career, Nolan made it clear (often at Bucks Fizz concerts and performances) that his philosophical thinking is not dissimilar to Immanuel Kant. Nolan agreed with Kant's assertion that, because of the limitations of reason, no one could really know if there is a God and an afterlife. But, then again, as Kant added (and Nolan concurred with), no one could really know that there was not a God and an afterlife. For the sake of society and morality, Kant (and Nolan) asserted, people are reasonably justified in believing in them, even though they could never know for sure whether they are real or not. Immanuel Kant (22 April 1724 – 12 February 1804), was a German philosopher from Königsberg in East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). ...

Nolan explained (in a not disimilar way to Kant) that: "All the preparations of reason, therefore, in what may be called pure philosophy, are in reality directed to those three problems only (God, Soul, Freedom). These themselves, however, have a still further object, namely, to know what ought to be done, if the will is free, if there is a God, and if there is a future world. As this concerns our actions with reference to the highest aims of life, we see that the ultimate intention of nature in her wise provision was really, in the constitution of our reason, directed to moral interests only."
