Milan was platted by Ebeneeser Merry in 1817 on the site of a previous Moravian Indian mission village[1805-1809].Merry had damed the Huron River below the village and established a gristmill and sawmill in the river valley . The town was incorporated in 1833 in part to finance a 3 mile ship canal which would link it with the Huron River where it was navigatable to lake vessels. Milan is located on the southern edge of the first praire of the midwest and the mid central area of Ohio south of Milan was a great wheat growing region. Prior to the advent of the railroad, farmers had to bring their harvest to the northern lakeports by wagon. The sandy and wet praire above Milan was not easily travelled acrossed by a wagon with a heavy harvest load, and it was reasonable to develop the canal that made Milan a lake port {Port of Milan --as it was referred to] The canal opened to lake navigation on July 4th ,1839 and for 10 years the village prospered. The rapid development of the railroads spelled the demise of the lake commerce . The inland harbor then served as a ship building center in part because of the extensive local stands of white oak which were used in ship building. The feeder dam failed 1n 1867-68 ending Milan's lake connection and the village "slumbered". Because it was not developed further it remains a rather quaint 19 th century town of 1400 or so, and surprises many visitors with it's charm.
